Electrical testing is one of the highest-risk parts of the job and the part most often done from habit rather than procedure. This refresher takes you back through the testing sequence step by step, with real test instruments in your hands, so you leave confident in both the method and the result you're reading.

Course outcomes:

On completion, participants should have a clearer understanding of:

• Legislative requirements for electrical testing in Queensland

• Safe electrical testing procedures and correct PPE

• Safe isolation and verification, including test for dead procedures

• Correct use of electrical test instruments

• Continuity, insulation resistance and polarity testing

• Earth fault-loop impedance testing and RCD testing

• The correct sequence of electrical tests

• Interpreting and recording test results

• Identifying common testing faults and issues

Practical training:

 

The bulk of the day is spent on the tools. You'll work through testing procedures on our electrical training equipment in a controlled environment, with guidance from a trainer who spent 25 years as a practising electrician, 15 of them in mining. Bring your own test instruments to practise with the gear you use every day.

Why do a testing refresher?

Queensland's electrical safety regulations were amended in 2024 to clarify that testing energised electrical equipment is a form of energised electrical work, and that testing to determine whether equipment is energised — testing for dead — is always treated as live work. That puts real weight on having your testing procedure right, every time. This course is about revisiting the fundamentals and proving to yourself that you've still got them.

No. This is a non-accredited skills refresher and does not result in a nationally recognised qualification or unit of competency. Participants should already hold the licences, competencies or authorisations required to legally perform electrical work in their jurisdiction.

How long does the course take?

5 hours, run at our Woombye facility. Onsite sessions can be adjusted to suit your team's shift pattern.

Can apprentices attend?

Yes. Apprentices are welcome and often get the most out of it, since the practical work reinforces what they're covering at trade school.
