WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Throughout this practical course, participants will develop the skills and knowledge required to manage a wide range of emergencies within an education and care setting.
Topics include:
• Assessing emergency situations and ensuring scene safety
• Accessing emergency services and communicating effectively
• Following First Aid action plans and workplace procedures
• Performing CPR on adults, children and infants
• Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• Managing asthma emergencies
• Administering adrenaline autoinjectors for anaphylaxis
• Managing choking incidents
• Treating bleeding and shock
• Managing fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
• Responding to snake bites and other envenomation incidents
• Treating minor wounds and nosebleeds
• Understanding the Chain of Survival
• Recognising psychological impacts following emergencies
• Communicating with children experiencing distress or trauma
• Reporting incidents and completing workplace documentation
Participants will also learn basic anatomy and physiology and understand the differences between emergency care requirements for adults, children and infants.

HLTAID010 – Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

COURSE DELIVERY
This course is delivered using a blended learning format consisting of:
• Self-paced online learning
• Face-to-face practical assessment session
Participants complete the online learning before attending the practical training and assessment session.
COURSE DURATION
Online Learning + Face-to-Face Assessment
• Self-paced online study completed before attendance
• Minimum 180-minute face-to-face practical assessment session
Completion times may vary depending on individual experience and learning needs.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Participants must:
• Be physically capable of performing practical first aid tasks
• Perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor
• Demonstrate rescue breathing techniques on manikins
• Have access to a computer, smartphone or tablet with internet access
• Complete any required online learning before attending
No previous first aid experience is required.
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
Participants are required to successfully complete both practical and theory assessments.
Practical Assessment Activities
Participants will demonstrate their ability to:
• Perform CPR on an adult casualty
• Use an AED safely and effectively
• Place a casualty into the recovery position
• Perform CPR on a child
• Perform CPR on an infant
• Manage an anaphylaxis emergency
• Manage an asthma emergency
• Assist a choking casualty
• Treat bleeding and shock
• Manage nosebleeds
• Manage fractures and dislocations
• Treat sprains and strains
• Respond to snake and funnel-web spider bites
• Complete a First Aid incident report form
Theory Assessment
Participants complete a written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions covering emergency response procedures and first aid knowledge online.
CERTIFICATE RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS
HLTAID012 Education First Aid
Industry recommendation is renewal every 3 years.
CPR Component
HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation should be renewed every 12 months in line with Australian Resuscitation Council recommendations.
